Safeguarding Children

Valley Road Primary School takes very seriously the issue of safeguarding. We also believe it is important to operate a common sense approach that does not mean an overreaction through red tape and policy.

To enable this to be possible we need to have a clear set of guidelines that make sense to staff, pupils and parents. These have been arrived at after discussion with the safeguarding team at Oxfordshire County Council.

  • The school will be open from 8.30am. The only open entrance is the main entrance.
  • No children are allowed on site before 8.30am unless accompanied by parents.

  • Children stay on the playground until 8.50am when they will be collected by the teacher and go into school. They do not come in before this time.
  • Teachers will collect pupils from the playground area where they line up when the bell goes at 8.50am

  • All children need to be in school and ready to line up by this time.
  • Pupils are allowed into the class from 8.45am when it is raining. An adult will be in the class to supervise them.
  • If a parent needs their child to use the toilet they need to report to reception first and then use one of the children’s toilets. The staff toilets should never be used.
  • Teachers are not available for consultation in the classroom before school unless by prior arrangement with the class teacher
  • If parents need to speak to the teacher with a quick message the playground is the time and place to do so
  • If a parent needs to discuss something in more depth a mutually agreed meeting time should be sought. This can be done through either a letter handed in at the school office or through a phone call.
  • The main door to the school is never to be left open. All visitors must report to reception on arrival and should ring the bell for attention.
  • Dinner money and other payments can only be paid for by cheque. The school prefers it if the cheque is handed in to the class teacher by the pupil in a named envelope.
  • Uniform is only available to purchase via an order form which should be handed in at the office. Mrs Hancock will sort out the order and the clothes will be available for collection every Monday.

  • Parents are requested to have left the school grounds by 9.20am at the latest.
  • If a parent is collecting or bringing a child into school during the school day they should immediately report to Reception to sign the child in or out. No children should be collected or returned directly to the class.
  • At the end of the school day parents are allowed to wait from 3pm outside the classes in the designated areas to collect their children.
  • In Orchard (Nursery), Reception and Key Stage 1 all children will only be handed over to the named adult. If there is a change to the person collecting it is the parents’ responsibility to inform the school of the change as soon as it is known. We will not send any child home unless that adult is a named person on our Database or we have been informed in advance.
  • It is parents responsibility to ensure the safety of their children once they have been collected from the class
  • All parents should leave the school grounds by 4.15pm after collecting their children at 3.15pm.
  • If parents wish for their children to use the outdoor play area when conditions are dry they must sign an agreement form stating they take full responsibility for their children.
  • Parents must supervise their children at the end of the school day. No school equipment is to be used for games before or after school.
  • For pupils staying to clubs, it is the club’s responsibility to ensure children are collected by an appropriate adult. Parents must inform the club as to the name of that person collecting or make it clear if the child is to walk home with parental permission. This should be in the form of a letter.
  • The school issues clear guidelines to all organisations using the school to ensure the safety of pupils
  • If a club is cancelled the school will ensure the parent of any child who is to be collected from school is contacted to inform them of this change.
  • If a child below Year 6 has permission to walk home from school at the end of the day we need this in the form of a letter
  • There is to be no cycling or scooting on school premises including pre-school children.
  • If a child has forgotten something at school they should return only if accompanied by a adult.
  • Any parent coming into school for whatever reason should sign in at the office. Identification badges must be worn. Guidelines for all parent helpers are available. Regular helpers will be CRB checked. For all other helpers a risk · assessment will be undertaken and a copy kept.
  • The school will make it clear in correspondence concerning trips if there are adults other than those employed by the school helping out and, if possible, the names of these individuals. Risk assessments and/or CRB checks will have been undertaken for all helpers.
  • At lunchtime the only doors that are open for the junior block are Chiltern Class and the boys’ toilet which are easily visible from the playground.
  • At the end of the school day after the children have departed all doors are locked by the push-bar on the door. If anything is needed from a classroom, please ask a member of staff to let you in.
  • Children must never open the door to a stranger. They must always fetch an adult.
  • Children will receive regular termly reminders about safety through assemblies and class discussion e.g. the internet
  • The school’s named First Aider is Caroline Barefield. Other TAs are also trained in First Aid as are some teachers
  • All clubs and trainee teachers will have had to show their CRB form to the school
  • All Valley Road Policies and procedures are in line with Oxfordshire County Council. Polices are available to view in the office and on the web site
  • The designated Child Protection teacher is the Headteacher, Tim Coulson. The named Governor is Mary Selvester. In the absence of Mr Coulson please speak to the Senior teacher, Laura Phillips.
